Paddy fields of Vietnam
Vietnam is the world's 5th largest rice exporter
According to the International Rice Research Institute “Vietnam is the world’s fifth-largest rice-producing country in the world. Rice production has continuously increased, from 25 million tonnes in 1995 to almost 40 million tonnes in 2010. This increase can be attributed to some expansion of rice harvested area and higher yield. Rice yield improved to 5.3 tonnes /hectare in 2010 from 3.7 tonnes per hectare in 1995”.
The Red River Delta or the Ha Nai
River delta in the North and the Mekong River Delta in the South are the main
agricultural areas in Vietnam. The Mekong Delta, also called Nine Dragons –
alluding to the 9 tributaries of the Mekong in the Delta region - spread across
40,576.62 km. With balmy tropical weather and ample rainfall from
both Southwest Monsoons and Northeast Monsoons the horticultural produce
accounts for currently at 4.3 tonnes hectare, with average yields in the Mekong
Delta around 4.2 tonnes per hectare and in the Red River Delta around 5.3 tonnes
per hectare.
